The Waimea Arts Council invites Big Island artists to submit work for a Juried Fine Art Show at its Firehouse Gallery in November and December.

The theme of this show is “Portal.”

Prizes over $1,000 will be offered, and the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts will visit to purchase art for the Hawaii State Museum collection. Beginning and seasoned artists are encouraged to enter.

According to the the Waimea Arts Council, the choice of a theme for an art exhibition serves several important reasons. Choosing one encourages everyone to think beyond the scope of the artist’s current work and usual themes. What does portal mean?

“Find a dictionary and thesaurus and look it up,” Exhibition Chair Amaury Saint-Gilles said in a press release. “There are many interpretations to choose from. Doing something very different, if only via imagery and not a new technique, can open creative gates you didn’t realize were in place.”

Entries will be accepted online from Oct. 1 to Oct. 15. A $30 nonrefundable entry fee for each piece will go toward the monetary awards.

Matthew Harper, the owner of Kona Frame Shop, and Wilfred Yamasawa, a highly recognized Holualoa glass artist, will jury this collection and choose the prize winners.

Cash awards will be announced at the reception on Saturday, Nov. 4. Go to the website for the complete rules and prospectus at www.waimeaartscouncil.org/category/call-for-art/, or email WaimeaArtsCouncil@gmail.com.
